Freelance News Photographer

I've been in love with photography since the day my Dad gave me a brand-new Russian Kalimar 35mm single lens reflex camera...in 1972. It was fully manual "starter camera," with an old-style light meter built-in -- a great way to learn the basics of balancing film speed, shutter-speed and aperture.

In 1988, I bought a Canon EOS 35mm film camera, and my favorite lens of all time: my Canon Fisheye EF 15mm wide angle. It is my standard lens for news photography, although I have others, including an awesome Canon EF 300mm telephoto lens. What a geek -- look at me throwing all this camera jargon around!

In 2005, I finally graduated to digital -- the Canon EOS 20D, mostly because I could keep all my good lenses. I love the 20D so much, I bought a second, so I am now one of those silly-looking people with two cameras hanging around his neck.

MY STYLE: I find that the wide angle lens meets most of my news photography needs. The wide angle documents large scenes for maximum context, but there are enough pixels (I shoot everything in high resolution) to crop tightly and still have good detail. I shoot many photos in manual mode, and bypass the flash.

I am fairly skilled at retouch in Adobe Photoshop.

MY SUBJECTS: I have covered all sorts of PR events, of course -- VIPs shaking hands, VIPs holding shiny shovels, VIPs accepting awards, VIPs handing-over giant checks.  I've shot many good business portraits, too.

I've shot nature photography since 1972 (my personal version of hunting, I suppose).

In May 1989, a series of four of my photos of an animal rescue were published on the front page of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

I've done a fair amount of food photography in recent years for Fleischmann's Yeast.  My food photos have been published in hundreds of U.S. newspapers.

Most recently, I was asked to document the work of an area fire department. My first photo for them was picked-up in The Washington Missourian and The Hermann Advertiser-Courier.

I don't do weddings, except this one. But I'd be happy to cover your next business function or public event in Washington, New Haven, Berger or Hermann, Missouri.
