Scaling the paywall-- getting paid for online news

Our online news site, www.CountyNewsLIVE.com, has the largest audience for any news site in a Missouri town under 10,000. More importantly, our number of PAID SUBSCRIBERS ($19.95 per year) is equal to about 13 percent of our town's households! We went from zero to 13 percent in five months. We are adding more subscribers every day. Sure, we sell plenty of display ads, too. But giving online news to the public for free is self-destructive and unecessary. Newspapers have to get paid for online news, or we will find it increasingly difficult to survive.
